Chapter Five

Robin was nervous, but for once it had nothing to do with his relationship with Miko. “Are you sure I should come with you?” he asked.

Miko looked at him. “You don’t have to if you’re not comfortable with the idea, but I’d really like to have you with me.” He turned back to the mirror in Robin’s room, frowning at his reflection.

He’d arrived about an hour ago, carrying a bag full of clothes. Robin hadn’t been sure what to make of it, but he’d understood when Miko had dropped the bag on his bed and had started pulling out clothes.

He’d asked him which one he believed would be better to meet his grandparents for the first time. Miko wanted to make a good impression, and he seemed to believe that the only way to do that would be to wear dress pants and a shirt. The problem was that those things didn’t belong on Miko. When he wore them, he looked awkward and out of place, and Robin had already told him so.

Miko pulled on the tie he’d insisted Robin help him put on. “What do you think? Will they like me?”

Robin wasn’t sure how to deal with this. He didn’t have much family left, but the family he did have—his grandmother—had always loved him. She wouldn’t care if he visited her wearing a shirt or a tank top. The same should go for Miko’s grandparents, but something told Robin that wouldn’t be so.

Miko had filled him in about what happened between his grandparents and his father, although he didn’t know much himself. Still, Robin felt he knew enough about Miko’s grandparents to dislike them. Hopefully they’d changed, but Robin was afraid of what would happen if they hadn’t.

What would they demand of Miko? Why were they contacting him now when they’d had nineteen years to do so? They’d explained it was because they thought Miko’s father would keep him from them, but Miko had found out that wasn’t the case. Robin didn’t want Miko to be hurt, but it felt like that was precisely what was about to happen, and there was nothing Robin could do to stop it.

But whatever happened, Robin would be there for Miko. How could he not be?

He smiled at Miko in the mirror. “You’re beautiful.”

Miko’s eyes narrowed and he turned around, his hands on his hips. “But? I can sense there’s a but.”

“But those clothes aren’t you. Don’t get me wrong, I think you’re gorgeous, and you can wear whatever you want, but I thought you wanted your grandparents to get to know the real you.”

“You don’t think this is the real me?”

Robin pushed up from his bed and went to stand in front of Miko. “I know it’s not. You’re not boring like me. You’re a colorful bird of paradise and should shine like one. Wearing a tie won’t change what your grandparents think of you. What matters is what’s in your heart, and if they can’t appreciate that, then they don’t deserve to spend any length of time with you.
