Chapter Six

The iron bedframe creaked and the mattress shook as she scooted off the bed. Simone skimmed her palms over the top of the footboard, feeling her way around in the darkness. If she left while the stupid bear was sleeping, she could get to the Pride, grab her girl and disappear long before Roar showed up. She combed her fingers through her hair and scrubbed her scalp. In the heat of the moment, listening to his pleading tone, she was weak. So fucking soft.

Her sweat pants were outside, on the side of the cabin with the rest of her clothes. She eased to the floor, crawling toward a darker outline.

“The doorway is in the other direction. You’re going to slam your head into the dresser if you keep moving that way.” A small circle of light illuminated the area, and Roar pulled his hand back from the lamp before leaning over the edge of the mattress. “You have gotten industrious in your old age.” A half smile lifted the corner of his mouth and a deep indentation etched his cheek.

“You’re five years older than me.” She twisted around to sit. “It’s time to go, Huggie Bear, I want to see Kimmie.”

“Huggie—what? That’s a new one. Where do you come up with these names?” He swung his feet to the floor. “I prefer Ice Bear.”

“It just came to me.” She rose and turned her head to hide her smile. Yeah, right. He’s in a relationship with that crazy she-wolf. “I’ll get my stuff and we can get out of here.”

He got up and crossed the short distance between them. “We still have a few hours. Let’s make the most of the time we have.” He caressed the bite mark on her shoulder. “Once we join up with your Pride…” He sighed.

“I’ll get my daughter.” She pushed past him.

Simone stopped at the door and banged her forehead on the hard wood barrier. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

He stuck his hand between her head and the hefty plank. “Stop. We’re mated. Get over it.”

“Urghh!” She stomped in place.

“Get your clothes and we’ll get out of here. I want to meet your little girl.” He kissed her mate mark before yanking the door open.

Roar stepped out into the cool early morning. Mists cloaked the ground and the air was heavy with dew. He trotted down the steps and jogged toward his bike a few feet in front of the building. His wide back bore the linear deep cuts caused by her claws during the heat of their passion.

She shook her head, she might never get away from the man now.

Her clothes were damp from dew; she shook them out and put them on. Slipping her feet into her tennis shoes, the rumble of his motorcycle made her look up. At some point he’d dressed, and was walking the bike around. She shoved her guns behind her into the waistband of her pants and pulled the shirt over them. Gently she grazed her fingers over the wound in her side.
