Chapter 10

“It’s official. You’re never going to be her favorite godfather again,” Elise yelled at Broderick over the noise of the helicopter’s spinning rotor blades. “You know that, right?” Smiling, she looked at him and found that he was already looking at her.

“She’ll get over it,” he yelled back at her, smiling, too.

Having just finished escorting Meagan to the Cannon Corp helicopter and handing her over to two of the most tight-faced, no-nonsense agents that Elise had ever seen—in person or on film—they were standing a safe distance away from the wind force of the blades, awaiting the chopper’s takeoff. Behind them, across a swatch of wet grass, the Hummer was parked at the side of the road, with its headlights on, set to high beam and slanted in their direction for visibility. After the helicopter’s landing skids lifted off from the landing strip, slowly rising into the night sky and taking its flashing lights with it, the path that the Hummer’s narrow halogen beams illuminated for them was the only thing standing between them and pitch blackness.

Slanting a hand over her eyes against the gently falling rain, Elise watched the helicopter’s ascent until its shiny black paint could no longer be distinguished from the night sky, then lowered her gaze to Broderick’s face. His expression was blank and unreadable. She hoped hers was, too.

“So...we’re alone again,” he mused, still smiling.

Elise felt her face heating up, but she refused to look away. “So we are.” Am I really going to do this? Again? “What’s next on the agenda?” To have something to do, someplace else to look, other than into his sleepy-looking, mesmerizing eyes, she glanced back at the Hummer and then up at the dripping sky. “You mentioned unfinished business. Does that mean we’re stopping off someplace else first before we go home?”

“Why don’t we get out of the rain and talk about it?” he suggested, motioning for her to precede him to the Hummer. When she did, he fell in step behind her.

“All right, but if you’ve masterminded some kind of criminal plan that you think I’m going to participate in, then—” In the rural night air, the high-pitched chirping sound that suddenly cracked the silence was like a bomb going off. Elise jumped, then froze, looking around wildly. “What in the hell was that?”

Behind her, Broderick’s deep, seductive chuckle reached her ears a second before the Hummer’s headlights switched off and every thing went completely black. Unable to see her hand in front of her face, Elise stood still, waiting. “Broderick... I swear to God, if this is some kind of joke, I—oh my God!” He grabbed her around her waist from behind, pulling her back against him with splayed hands that instantly set off crawling in opposite directions along her torso. She was so distracted by the sensation of his warm breath shooting down the side of her neck and the tip of his dancing tongue against the shell of her ear that his
