At last I turned and walked back down, following an easy though wide-sweeping route that my moseying had revealed. Half an hour later I was once more floating seaward.

The river flowed smooth and simple, complicated only by swirls and side currents. Soon, the bounding red cliffs began to grow taller. When I looked up at their glorious, solemn, blue-varnished rock faces, the rims seemed very far away. And above the rims I could see only a narrowing strip of bright blue sky. But my mind’s eye no longer stopped short at the rim. My river world stretched wider, now.
