Chapter 4

“How did it go?” Amabel turned to Gretchen the moment she entered their room, and the succubus seemed hesitant at first, but eventually sat down and told the blonde about Monique’s proposal.

Amabel heard her without an ounce of emotion in her face, trying to clarify some things at certain points, but remaining mostly silent as Gretchen explained.

“What are you going to do?” She asked at the end.

Gretchen shrugged and shook her head. “I have no idea.” She gazed at her girlfriend’s face. “I was kind of hoping you would help me there.”

Amabel opened her mouth and closed it, then remained silent for a bit, seemingly thinking about it. “I can’t say it isn’t a good deal, and not just because you need allies.” She hesitated once more, and the smile she gave Gretchen was full of sadness. “I … might not always be here, and if something happens to me, you need someone on your corner, someone that can sate your hunger in an emergency, or even more ...”

Gretchen pressed one finger against her lips, shaking her head. “Don’t even think about it.” Her heart was pounding in her chest, and she couldn’t let Amabel say those words. She couldn’t even think about the blonde leaving her one day. “That’s not going to happen.”

Amabel held unto Gretchen’s hands and pulled them down, then her lips twitched sadly. “It might. No matter how much I don’t wish it to happen, it might. And I would be a fool to forget about it, or ignore that possibility and put you at risk. And so would you.”

The succubus turned her head away, but a caress made her turn back. “You’re strong enough to resist the temptation.” Amabel was, she was certain of it. She had to be.

The blonde smiled, and there were tears in her eyes. “There’s nothing I want more than to be by your side, but I can’t promise it will be, not forever. I can’t explain just how tempting it is to close my eyes and just listen to the choir from up-high, how much a part of me longs to be there.” She shook her head, and her breath came out raggedly. “There’s a part of me that isn’t at home in here, and can only be happy up there, and I can’t promise that one day that part won’t have control over me.”

Gretchen buried her head in Amabel’s chest, wanting to cover her ears with the other woman’s body, refusing to listen to those words. Amabel read her mood perfectly and grew silent, simply holding her beloved, comforting her as she could, running her hands through Gretchen’s dark hair.

Minutes passed, then half-an-hour, and they didn’t seem to want to part, content in each other’s warmth. Eventually, though, Gretchen had to gather herself and lean back, brushing away the tears that she refused to accept had fallen from her eyes. “So,” She started, and her tone came out rough, forcing her to clear her throat. “What should I do?”

Amabel breathed deeply before answering.
