Chapter Six

Base from the club below made the floor boards thump. Muffled singing floated up through them. Noemelee sat with her back to the wall, Fumiko sat with her chair slightly in front of hers. Two brawny men in wrinkled suits stood at the entrance. They didn’t move, didn’t speak and gazed straight ahead. She stood to stretch and swore that on the burly guys growled. Fumiko yanked her down into her seat.

“We can take them Fumiko.” She leaned forward and whispered.

“I can, one. You -no.” She shook her head slowly. Her eye was swollen shut and a big purple bruise colored her jaw. “I will teach you – fight, later.”

“That sounds like fun.” Noemelee joked hoping or a smile from the other woman. “Do you know where we are?” She glanced around. Heavy blinds covered the windows and she wasn’t sure if it was night or day. Book cases lined one wall but the shelves were empty and a large desk dominated the middle of the room. There were only three chairs in the room, she and Fumiko occupied two of them. From her position she could only see the two exits, one which she assumed was a large window and could be wrong. There was no doubt about the door being guarded by the twin monsters.

“Host club.” Fumiko grimaced as she spoke.

“I’ll get us out of here.” Noemelee nodded for emphasis.

A brief snort escaped Fumiko. “Wait for Karakurenia-san. Hiiro-san won’t be far away.” She pressed her palm to the side of her face.

“You rest. The way these guys move us around. Ryu won’t find us easily.” She stood. “Hey, I need to pee.” Noemelee pressed her thighs together.

One man finally looked her way then looked at his partner who nodded. He marched up to her yanking her in his direction. She looked back at Fumiko and winked. Fumiko slid forward in her seat and the other man stepped up.

“I’ll be back soon Fumiko!” She was shoved through the doorway.

Nondescript ivory walls stretched the length of the hallway. Florescent overhead lights bathed everything in a bright yellow glow. She wasn’t sure which way lead to an exit and the guy hadn’t released her arm. Her jerked her along with him as he lumbered down the passage. She would have bruises by the time he let her go. Two doors on opposite sides of the hallway faced each other. A third barrier with a long window set in the side was at the end of corridor. In the corner a fire extinguisher with its hose hanging loosely on the side. A plan formulated in her head. All she had to do was get to the extinguisher.

Big guy swung her around, slamming her into the jamb. Hard wood bit into her shoulder. She glanced to the side at the shiny red metal container. It was now or never. Noemelee wrenched her arm free. Burning sensations crawled up her limb as he twisted his palm across her skin. She ran toward the exit, praying that was what it was.
