Chapter Five

John

You wear white and I’ll wear out the words ‘I love you’ and ‘you’re beautiful.’ — Train, ‘Marry Me’

Taylor’s face is etched in pure horror. She’s so lovely that even her terrified features are enough to make my cock throb.

“John, I can’t sing in public!”

I roll my eyes, smiling.

“That’s going to make karaoke really boring, Taylor. Come on. Live a little.”

She shakes her head vehemently.

“No. No. Absolutely not.”

I place one hand on her arm, the other tilting her chin up to meet my eyes. Hers are wide and wild. “Hey. It’s ok. We don’t have to, I just thought it would be a memorable first date. Something to tell the grandkids about.”

A smile blossoms on her face, a flower unfurling in the sun.

“Jerk. No. It’s fine, I just — I have terrible agoraphobia. Or whatever embarrassing-yourself-in-public-phobia is.”

Her eyes sparkle in the bright neon lights of the LA at night. The lights are so bright that I can see the bands of color that lurk in her dark eyes. Shards of gold and amber that only shine in the brightest sun

“Alright. We’ll warm up to it. In the meantime, I think we can accommodate you. I’ll even demonstrate it first.” I make a show of tapping my chin, studying the sky as if lost in thought.

“Come on. You’re perfectly safe with me, Taylor.”

She smiles at that, eyes sparkling with fire.

“Liar.”

I slide her arm through mine, giving it a pat as I escort her in the backdoor.

“See? You already know me so well.”

The club is packed, of course. Alcohol and public singing are like peanut butter and jelly. The distant thump of bass rattles my bones as we take the stairs up to the top level.

To the private booths.

I’d called ahead already, of course. Letting the staff know to not let anyone else onto the floor. Even before I knew Taylor’s fear, I had wanted to be as alone with her as possible.

Not wanted. Needed.

The top floor of the Venue is a railed balcony that looks down on the small tables, booths, and couches scattered around the first floor. The different parties all laugh and sing to themselves. It never fails to bring a smile to my face. Before Taylor, it was the only thing that could.

I lead her deeper, heading to my personal booth. I guide her in and twitch the heavy blackout curtains behind us, leaving us sheltered in the storm of sound. I slide into the booth next to her, pressing my thigh up against hers. The brief contact sends electric sparks racing along my skin.

Her eyes are as wide as her smile as she takes it all in.

“This is absolutely incredible, John.”

I grin despite myself. I can’t help it, The Venue is my baby, and I’m glad Taylor appreciates it as much as I do.

“You ain’t seen nothing yet.” I touch the top of our table, and the video touchscreen melts away. Different views of the different groupings pop up, along with several buttons. I zoom in on one, letting us listen to the vocal stylings of the club’s patrons.
