Shame doesn’t compound shame when love is the response.

Cody taught me that God doesn’t remove his presence when we struggle. In what feels like heaven, or hell, he stays with us, holds us, and loves us all the way to wholeness and integrity.

Where can I go from Your Spirit?

Or where can I flee from Your presence?

If I ascend into heaven, You are there;

If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.

If I take the wings of the morning,

And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

Even there Your hand shall lead me,

And Your right hand shall hold me.

If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,”

Even the night shall be light about me;

Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You,

But the night shines as the day;

The darkness and the light are both alike to You. (Ps. 139:7–12 NKJV)

All that to say Cody and I came far in our first year in the areas of communication, honesty, and vulnerability. I learned from the dishwasher shenanigans that I personally still had a ways to go to remain connected consistently, and that we as a couple needed to learn to rest. We spent the next year flipping our energy output on its head. We wanted the best to flow in our home and to do our best in our other spheres of influence, but not at the expense of our personal intimacy with God and with each other.

Our first step was growing in accountability, and not the kind where you meet for coffee once a month and act like you know each other. We wanted to live together in deep, abiding relationship, where we were known and loved and could have the honor and responsibility of intimately knowing and loving others. Cody and I are huge fans of Dr. Jim Burns, founder of HomeWord, and his teaching on marriage, family, and parenting. He is an incredible advocate of accountability through deeply rooted friendships, and he has a list of twelve questions to ask friends in order to live present and remain honest about where we really are. Cody and I both decided to get in a group with a few trusted friends and start going through these questions every week.

Do you like the person you are becoming?

Is your heart for God shrinking or growing?

Are you giving your family only your emotional scraps?

Have you done anything that compromised your integrity with the opposite sex?

Have you compromised your integrity with finances?

Is your character submitted to Christ?

Are you faithfully involved with worship and service?

Is your pace of life sustainable?

Have you allowed a person or circumstance to rob you of joy?

Are you taking care of your body through physical exercise and proper eating and sleeping habits?

Have you been faithful to regular connections with Jesus?

Have you lied on any of your answers with me?*
