Chapter 16

STEELE

I’m pretty sure being trapped on a tour bus while my twin daydreams about the things he wants to do to Ashten is my own personal version of hell.

That’s saying something, considering I’ve been in hell and it wasn’t nearly as intolerable.

After a pitstop and a few more hours on the road, Emrys finally lent me his headphones so I could listen to music. Desperate for escape, I tried everything from techno to death metal music with the volume on high, trying to drown out all the unwanted thoughts.

It worked…somewhat.

The second we arrive at the concert venue, I’m off the tour bus, intent on putting as much distance between it and me as possible. Being cooped up for hours on end when I can’t shut out Daire’s obnoxious thoughts is bad enough, but having to look at him the entire time, knowing how he went behind my back to go to Ashten, has me seeing red all over again.

I don’t know what it’ll take to move past this, if we can move past it, but I’d be perfectly content if he disappeared until our next show. I’d smother him in his sleep if I knew I wouldn’t be sent back to hell with him.

I haven’t even considered a destination—I’m too wound up to focus on anything other than walking—when the faintest scent catches my attention. It’s light, sweet, floral…familiar. Stopping abruptly, I inhale, closing my eyes and focusing on the whisper of energy lingering in the air around me.

Ashten.

My eyes fly open again and I look around, searching the dimly lit parking lot for any sign of her. I come up short, but I focus on the scent and her energy, taking slow steps as I follow the faint trail. It leads me toward Sebastian’s bus, and my pulse picks up speed as I get closer. Her scent is stronger, clearer.

I reach for the door, brushing my fingers along the glossy metal, and I can feel her, the remnants of her energy almost tangible. She’s definitely been here.

The lights are on inside, so I know Sebastian and Niki are still awake, and I don’t feel bad for pounding my knuckles against the metal. A few seconds later, the door flies open, and Sebastian’s masked face greets me, along with a stronger waft of Ashten’s unmistakable scent.

“Can I help you?” he asks, glaring down at me.

He’s in dark pants and a long-sleeve shirt, similar to what most of us wear when we aren’t in our costumes, and his aura is bleeding darkly into the air around him. However, I’m on a mission, too preoccupied to care whether I’m bothering him.

“Where is she?” I breathe deeply to drink in the lingering hint of her scent. “Where is Ashten?”

“Not here,” Sebastian snaps, his voice low. “Keep it down. Niki just went to sleep.”

I ignore him, but not because I don’t care about his mate’s beauty rest. My heart is hammering hard as I think about Ashten and what she was doing here. I doubt she came to say hey to Sebastian, though she might have wanted to see Niki.
