“Thank you.”

Looking up from where he'd been working on a new case file, the district attorney found his PA standing in the door of his office. Since he'd driven her to work the previous day, there had been precious little talk between them. He'd given her her tasks, valiantly staving off his still rampant hunger for her, and attempted to bury himself in his work.

To forget what he'd seen.

Cecilia obviously wanted to keep her private life exactly that – private; and by seeking her out, he'd crossed a boundary.

He seemed to be pressing his luck with this woman – first with her body and then with her secrets.

But now, here she was; expression humble, stance respectful, as she looked at him over his desk. He straightened as she continued. “For the medicine, I mean. Xaviar's already feeling a whole lot better.”

“Good.” He nodded, managing to keep his eyes from roving to where her bosom stretched the front of the cream-colored sweater she wore. Christ, he was such an animal. Even after seeing the squalor in which she lived and knowing how much trouble he caused her, he still ached for her. She continued to invade his thoughts and frustrate his work. “Was there anything else?”

“Yes!” Her answer was a bit too forceful as she hurried forward to place several files on his desk. “I've typed up Tyler Baldwell's statement. Also Stevens', though there's room for revision if you want to include more. Also, your cleaners called to say your suit is ready and I've cleared your schedule for the charity event this Thursday.”

He took the paperwork from her, electricity tingling in his fingertips when they brushed hers.

Damn. The charity. He'd almost completely forgotten in the upset of the previous day.

Cecilia turned to leave his office, only to pause with one foot out the door. In a split second, she returned to his side before leaning down to press her mouth to his.

For a moment, Alexander was taken by surprise – but only a moment.

His fingers rose to tangle in her hair as he pulled her into his lap and flush against his body.

Yes. This was what he'd wanted for the past forty-eight hours. What he'd ached for even as he'd watched her chatting idly with Margaret or taking messages on the phone. Her mouth burned against his and her tongue was like silk – driving him out of his mind.

But this was wrong. He'd already overstepped his boundaries twice. To do it again would be unwise. Even if Cecilia did want him as desperately as he wanted her, he couldn't use her while it was convenient to him with the knowledge of what she returned to every evening after serving his every whim.

He wasn't that cold-hearted.

What she needed was an escape -and perhaps, in doing so, she could take pressure from him as well.

Almost painfully, he broke the kiss to cup her chin, lifting her gorgeous face so he could take in the sight of her swollen lips and desirous, hooded eyes.
