Our brains are always working, even when we're asleep, and dreams are the best way to access that treasure trove of characters, not to mention story ideas. If you get in the habit of sleeping with your journal next to your bed and of setting your alarm for ten minutes earlier than you usually get up, you'll surprise yourself by the dreams you're inhabiting when you awake.

For those of you who are lucid dreamers, or who have a few strong nightmares that really stand out to you, consider mining those for character ideas. The first Terminator film is one of my favorite science fiction movies. The idea for the film came to James Cameron in a nightmare. He was working on a film in Italy and was awoken one night from a horrible dream. A metal skeleton had emerged from an explosion and was pulling itself toward Cameron using knives. He scribbled down the image on hotel stationery, and the rest of the story ideas came rushing in. If you're a lucid dreamer, you have some of those images yourself. Look them over and see what you can use.
