Part 3 â Living your Best Life with Tinnitus
Chapter 7 - Better than Before
âNever forget: This very moment, we can change our lives. There never was a moment, and never will be, when we are without the power to alter our destiny.â
- Steven Pressfield, author
Up until this point, the strategy has focused on education, and specific techniques designed to enable and speed up the process of habituation. But there is a lot more you can do to improve the quality of your life with tinnitus. Habituation is the answer, but itâs not the whole answer. Iâve mentioned time and again that your tinnitus wonât go away, but it will stop bothering you. This is still true. Yet there are countless other things that you can do to further improve your tinnitus.
I will first teach you how to identify your triggers. Regardless of how you ended up with tinnitus, there are most likely specific things that make it worse. These are called triggers, and while many of them are common, each case of tinnitus is unique. Finding the triggers that make your tinnitus worse, and avoiding them, at least initially, will help to speed up your progress. It will also give you the information you need to make better choices for your health.
We will go on to take a look at one of the biggest threats to your continuing success: preventable noise-induced hearing loss. If your tinnitus gets a lot worse or changes in some significant way, you may have to habituate to the sound all over again. In my experience, this isnât necessarily a huge deal. Itâs easier the second time around, especially if you have continued to practice tinnitus meditation. But it's a better idea to prevent your tinnitus from getting worse in the first place. Preventing noise-induced hearing loss will be of the utmost importance. I will explain why it's such a threat, what to watch out for, and how you can protect your hearing.
After that, we will explore strategies for stress management. Stress can, and will, make your tinnitus considerably worse. Keeping your stress levels under control will be an important part of your tinnitus treatment strategy. Practicing tinnitus meditation is a big step in this direction, but there are a lot of other helpful things you can do as well. I will cover these in detail.
Finally, I will teach you how to get better sleep. Tinnitus can not only make it hard to fall asleep, but can also severely disrupt the quality. And while your sleep will start to improve as you begin to habituate to the sound, there are steps you can take today that will make a difference.
By the time you finish reading this final section, you will be ready to take on the challenges of tinnitus. This is the final piece of the puzzle. Letâs begin.
