Chapter 25

The community relations task force team continued to go down to Wythel one day a week, every week throughout spring and well into summer. They watched carefully for signs of AMAN discourse that would signal someone was talking to them about those in the bunker, but there were none. They befriended the former mayor and police chief, who continued to be the dominant figures of authority for the people. Charlie put Milo in charge of those relations, which negated the previous buddy system.

This meant that Holly was free to see Griffon while in town and without so many watchful eyes, and they continued to meet at the cave from time to time as well. In town, they tried to hide their relationship as much as possible, but word gets around in a small town, and Griffon’s interest in the outsider, Holly, was soon the talk of the town.

Milo was uncomfortable with the chatter but brushed it off as mere gossip. So what if Griffon was interested in Holly? There was no way she could be interested in a guy like that. After all, everyone in the bunker knew that he and Holly were going to marry.

Mike Jenkins had all but guaranteed Milo of a fall wedding, despite the engagement break up. Holly was friendly with him again, and, while he was not pressuring her right now, he felt they were slowly growing close again. Everything seemed right on track.

He was busy establishing himself both in the bunker and in the town of Wythel. People respected him and he knew he would soon be able to give Holly the life she deserved. He told Emma Grace his plan, knowing this goal was consuming him. He was hurt that she had been distant and refused to talk to him about it. He missed his friend greatly.

Emma Grace was more remote than ever, spending time alone in nature or stuck in a book in her room in the bunker. Rarely did anyone see her anymore. She was heartbroken. She had always held out hope that Milo would eventually see that she was the right woman for him. His confessions of love for Holly had been her final straw, and so she locked herself away from everyone, even him, and mourned the loss of what could have been.

Holly was always in the spotlight, whether in the bunker or in the town. She had befriended practically everyone and often spent more time in town than at the compound. When the rumors of her and Griffon finally hit Mike, he was furious. Milo tried to assure him that it was nothing more than rumor, but he would not have his little girl’s name slandered like that.

When Holly came home late one night after one of her little getaways, Mike was up waiting.

“Holly, can I talk to you for a minute?”

“Sure dad. What’s up? I didn’t think you’d still be up this late.”

“And I didn’t think you’d be out so late,” he scolded.

She shrunk a bit.
