CHAPTER SEVEN

JOLIE TREATED ERRANDS like a marathon. In order to get all her business in The World done and over with in one day, she’d happily run herself to the point of exhaustion. Today she’d even kept Anthony home from school and managed to get out in the early morning, get meetings done, get back home to pick Anthony up and drop him at Reece’s office, and now she’d check ‘Bank’ off her list. As soon as the loan officer got back from wherever he’d gone to.

She wasn’t entirely certain what would happen at the meeting, whether or not he would just discuss options with her or whether he’d have her filling out paperwork. Dealing with banks for the circus and the farm had always been the business of Ginny and Mack. No wonder they’d gravitated to each other. They both had to deal with bureaucracy, and while they might not enjoy it, they were at least competent. Another thing she didn’t want Reece to be right about.

He’d said she couldn’t go out into the world and get students for the camp. It would be the biggest lie of her life if she tried to say that he was wrong about her not wanting to go out into the world at all. But having him say she couldn’t was either a dare or forbidding her to, and both possibilities roused in her the wrong reaction. However ridiculous or immature, shining a spotlight on her weakness made her want to prove him wrong.

But it was more than that. She wanted to prove to herself that she could do this. No matter how good her reasons for wanting to stay safely inside the circus life, those reasons were now a road block that kept her from reaching her next destination.

The door opened and Jolie turned in her seat to look at the man walking in.

‘Miss Bohannon, I’m Matt Carmichael. There’s a man in the lobby asking for you. He didn’t give his name but he said that you would know who he is.’

‘I know who he is,’ Jolie said. She didn’t need to look and see who it was, but stood and offered a hand to the loan officer in his pigeon-grey suit and overly starched white button-down. ‘He can wait where he is.’ She shook his hand and then pointedly closed the door and returned to her seat. Let him watch her, the big jerky know-it-all. ‘I’m not entirely certain what the meeting is for. I’ve never applied for any sort of loan before, but with the amount of information about loans and the whole process online, I just wanted to talk to someone face to face. Thank you for agreeing to see me on such short notice.’

‘You’re welcome...’

Before he could continue the door swung open and Reece marched in. ‘I need to speak with Miss Bohannon for a moment.’

‘Sir, I really must ask that you wait in the lobby.’

‘It’s okay,’ Jolie said, sighing and standing. ‘We’ll be quick, Mr.
