I’ve never felt more uncomfortable than I do now, especially with Jinx glaring at me as if I’m at fault.

“I had nothing to do with that.” I hold up my hands and take a step back, smoothing my voice as I brace for Jinx’s fiery temper. “She just …”

“Steamrolled you? I know what she did. My question is why didn’t you stop her?”

“Now, wait a minute.” I take a step toward Jinx, defending myself.

“You don’t trust a chick to do the job, do you? You think I need Guardian oversight?”

“Don’t put words in my mouth. Mitzy said that. Not me. The last thing I think is that you need Guardian oversight. Don’t turn this into something it isn’t.”

“Is that so?” She juts her chin out, growing more indignant with each passing second. “Because I didn’t hear you say otherwise.”

“You calling me a liar?” Heat rises in the back of my neck. My fingers flex, forming fists. Jinx can be pissed all she wants, but that doesn’t give her the right to question my integrity. I shake out my fists. No matter how angry I become, I’ll never hit a woman. I’ll never hit Jinx.

“I’m simply stating a fact.” Jinx’s lips press into a tight line of fury and resentment.

“And what would that be?” I shift forward.

She needs to watch it because I stand by my word. No one question’s my integrity.

“How typical this is.” Jinx juts out her jaw, throwing a snit. “Men like you always think you can do things better than a woman. Frankly, it’s tiring.”

“You need to calm down.” I’m too tired for this. Getting into a fight with Jinx tops my list of things I don’t want to do.

“Calm down?” Jinx takes a few steps, closing the distance between us. Her entire body vibrates with rage. “In the entire history of mankind, men telling women to calm down has never once made things better. Don’t feed me that shit; it’s a sure-fire way to make things worse. And I don’t need to calm the fuck down. I’m right, and you’re a fucking bastard because you know it.”

“A what!?” Tension fills my body as I become anything but calm. The kicker is I’m not angry. I’m not mad. Oh no, it’s far worse than that. I’m fucking turned on and getting more so by the minute.

“You heard me.” She takes a step toward me. “And here I thought …” Jinx makes a move to turn away.

“You thought, what?” I grab her arm, spinning her back toward me.

“I shouldn’t have come back.” Jinx yanks free and rubs at her arm. “I should’ve stayed with Lily and had that girls’ night out.”

“I didn’t make you turn around.”

“No, you didn’t. Lily did.”

And like that, her words hit me with the force of a sucker punch to the gut, stealing my breath. I thought Jinx came back for me. She didn’t. Lily did.

Well, fuck that.

I put my barely touched glass of whiskey down on the table and do my best to take in long, slow breaths.
