Rescue Me

Chapter Six

Dieter hadn’t intended to leave Deja; but then again, he hadn’t meant to tell her so much about himself either. Consequently, he was not a happy man when he strode into the warehouse that served as the Petric headquarters. There was a time when he too had offices in such a setting. It seemed like a million years ago, yet he found he didn’t appreciate the reminder. By the time he and Claus entered the dingy office located near the back of the dusty place, Dieter was more than a little pissed having to make the journey in the first place. It was better than pacing his rooms waiting for the judgment of a woman who had come to mean so much to him in so little time; however, it was not his usual method of solving problems.

This visit was personal. Lazar had managed to slip through his highly trained security teams by sheer luck. Dieter wasn’t a happy man. Should the sorry piece of shit come within a mile of Deja, he couldn’t promise to keep a tight rein on the fury threatening to engulf him now.

“Mr. von Blucher! To what do I owe this great, great honor?” Grgur Petric was all smiles and pleasantness—forced, of course.

Dieter’s hands itched to encircle the smaller man’s neck and squeeze. Claus must’ve read that, because the blond giant moved to place himself between them. Grgur visibly flinched, moving back, which offered a tiny bit of solace, but not nearly enough.

“Your brother was outside my building—my home.” Dieter stopped for effect, fixing a bland stare directly at Grgur. He didn’t miss the woman in the corner of the dingy office, trying to do her best to disappear into the corner of the imitation leather couch.

A soft growl emitted from Claus’s throat, no doubt taking in two things at once. One, the woman had bruises on her cheek, her neck, and she winced when she tried to quietly slide over, indicating there were unseen bruises as well. The second fact caused a tick to appear in Dieter’s cheek. Without even looking directly at the woman, the resemblance to Deja was undeniable. The mother, and she was not with this man by choice. Her posture indicated she had grown used to the abuse she suffered, something that had Claus clenching and unclenching his massive fist by his side. Dieter wasn’t going to be able to save this man, even if he had any inclination to. He just hoped that Claus would wait until Dieter could find out all he wanted to know.

“I ensure you it was not by my order. I will take care of my brother.” Interesting. Grgur was telling the truth. Dieter had begun to suspect that there was much more to this than Grgur simply giving Deja to his brother. Deja was too precious for such a rock-headed oaf. “I will make sure Lazar never troubles you again.”

“That is not necessary.” Dieter deliberately walked closer, stopping scant inches from the smaller, profusely perspiring, round little man.
