Chapter Fifteen

Alphonse knew deep in his gut that something was going on with Requiem. His most trusted male, the one he counted on when the chips were down, was acting odd and had been ever since he’d gone on the safari tour. Just what was up with him? He didn’t know. But here it was after midnight, and the male still hadn’t returned from gathering supplies.

The front door creaked as it opened, and he turned from where he’d been staring out the kitchen window to see Heath, his right-hand male, stride into the cabin. The male looked like a mixture of elation and anger.

“What did you find?” Alphonse asked. After Heath had said Requiem wouldn’t let him come along to run errands, his suspicions had been piqued. He’d sent Heath to follow, using the GPS tracker hidden on his truck. Alphonse had trackers on pack members’ phones, which everyone knew about. Requiem had turned his tracker off once he’d returned from the VIP tour, which had sparked Alphonse’s curiosity, so he’d put a tracker on his truck.

“He went on a date with someone from the park, one of the wolves, I think.”

Ah, so that explained the elation. Heath didn’t like Requiem even though they were roommates. He would revel in seeing Requiem fall from grace.

It, unfortunately, was terrible news for Alphonse.

“It’s possible he’s trying to get close to someone from the park to get information about the pack and the other shifters,” Alphonse said.

Heath arched a brow. “I suppose. But why didn’t he tell us what he was doing if it’s on the up-and-up?”

“Good point.”

Alphonse lifted his cell and pressed the phone icon, selecting Requiem’s name from his contacts. The call rang three times before it was answered.

“Yes?” Requiem asked.

For a moment, Alphonse wanted to call him out, but then he changed his mind. He was curious what the male was up to, and he’d wait for him to either keep up the subterfuge or share what he’d learned.

“You didn’t return or check in. You’re well?”

There was a brief pause, then he said, “Yes, of course. Sorry I didn’t check in.”

“You’re still gathering supplies?”

He cleared his throat. “I’m on my way back.”

Alphonse looked at the tracker screen on the laptop and saw that the truck was still at the park. “I’ll be waiting.”

“For what?”

“I’d like to discuss the plans to infiltrate the park.”

“We can meet in the morning. It’s late.”

“The cameras have been planted for more than a day. I want to brainstorm a plan of attack with the high-ranked males.”

He ended the call and set his phone on the counter.

Heath looked smug. “He didn’t tell you about the date, which means it’s not related to our takeover.”

“It appears so.” Alphonse rested his hands on the counter, his fingers gripping the old Formica. “Keep this between us for now.”

Heath looked like he might argue, but once Alphonse narrowed his gaze at the male, he changed his mind and said nothing.

“Gather the males to discuss infiltrating the park. Once Requiem is here, we’ll see what he wants to share with us.
