Hardware

Expect to make some adjustments to the window's hardware during the course of the unit's life or during its rehabilitation. First consider the hardware's functional and decorative nature. Pulls, hinges, latches, and sash locks, like the window unit itself, tend to accumulate paint that restricts proper operation. Often, removing the paint and lubricating these parts is the least expensive way to renew hardware. Ornamental hardware is expensive to replace and should be retained whenever possible.

When the original hardware is no longer required for the window's operation, consider maintaining it in place if it will not inhibit operation. Various replacement products are available, including some stock period castings that may be appropriate to the window's style and period.

Sash locks and latches, which may be necessary to improve security as well as the windows' fit, are available in both reproduction and contemporary designs.

Sash balances include weights, pulleys, spring and pressure balances as well as modern designs for tracking mechanisms, and blockand-tackle and spring-balancing mechanisms for double-hung sash. New sash weights may be required in a window rehabilitation plan if weight is being added to the sash by an additional layer of glazing material. Lead, which is heavier than cast iron, can be substituted in cases where space is limited in the weight pockets. In windows that do not have a proper double-hung mechanism, new tracks can be installed on the window frame, improving operation as well as fit.

Hinges for closing, extending, or sliding windows and various types of pivot hardware, cranks, and other operating hardware are more difficult to replicate, but many contemporary designs can be installed on existing steel windows.

If possible, equip windows in the building's more important public spaces with recycled original hardware.
