Foliage is the mass dying of deciduous leaves. To witness this death, hordes of people drive northward and eastward to places like the Catskills. The many towns in the Catskills are called hamlets. A hamlet is a town within a town, a village of sorts, that has its own post office but no government or well-defined borders. The word comes from the old French ham, which is equivalent to the old English hām, which is equivalent to the modern English home. A hamlet can have decent landscape, tall mountains, large lakes, etc. It can have lots of houses, not all of them homes. Home is not a given and, for many, a hard, sometimes impossible place to find.
