CHAPTER TWENTY
Reno was just getting his drink order filled, they only served beer, when the manager walked out of the restaurant. Reno was already feeling some kind of way about the conversation he and Tree had had, and he wasn’t interested in any further confrontations. But when he got the two beer mugs and began to head back outside, and saw the man at Tree’s table, and saw that Tree looked distressed, he hurried.
“There’s nobody out here,” Reno heard Trina say.
“That has nothing to do with it,” the manager replied.
“It has everything to do with it. You say the table is reserved. Fine. If the people show up before we leave, then I will gladly relinquish this seat. But until that happens, why should I?”
“What’s this about?” Reno asked as he sat the drinks on a different table and went up to his wife.
“This woman is . . .” Suddenly the manager recognized who had just walked up. “Oh, my goodness, it’s you. It’s Mr. Gabrini. Hello, sir. What an honor to meet you. I’m the manager here. I applied to work at the PaLargio before. Many times before. But I never got a call back.”
Reno couldn’t care less about some failed application. “What’s going on out here?” he asked.
“Nothing to be concerned about, sir. This woman is being aggressive, as you might expect. You know how they are. I told her this table is reserved and she has to move on, but she wants to give me lip. She’s very disruptive.”
“Disruptive?” Reno asked, and Trina inwardly smiled. That managing asshole was about to see what disruptive really looked like.
“She’s very disruptive, yes,” the unsuspecting manager said.
“That’s my wife you’re calling disruptive,” Reno replied. “You sawed-off cocksucker!”
The manager was stunned. “Your wife, sir?”
“Yes, my wife!” Reno hated racists with a passion. He was never like his cousin Sal, who had to rid himself of his racist demons, or his deceased brother Joey. Reno was more like Tommy. Neither one of them had a racist bone in their bodies. And now that he had three half-black sons of his own, Jimmy Mack, Dominic, and Carmine, he was particularly annoyed whenever he ran across one. Like now.
“I didn’t realize she was your wife, sir,” the manager insisted. “Please forgive me. I was just commenting on what I saw. Because, quite frankly, she was very aggressive in that way people like her normally are.”
Reno frowned. “What’s with you and this aggressive? That supposed to be a code word you racist pieces of shit use that I’m supposed to know? You want to see aggressive?” he asked the manager. “I’ll show your ass aggressive!”
And with those words, Reno’s anger was unleashed and he didn’t hesitate. He grabbed the manager by the shirt, hoisted him up, and tossed him violently through the plate glass window. The glass shattered, the patrons inside the restaurant scrambled out of the way, and the manager began to bleed.
“Now that’s aggressive,” Reno said as the few patrons inside the café looked horrified, but didn’t come to the manager’s assistance.
