Chapter Thirteen

THE BREAST CANCER WALK foursome had gotten into the habit of going for a walk a couple of times a week on the mornings that Jamie and Ryan were in San Francisco. Maeve and Catherine went without them if they weren't there, but when the four of them went together they went further, and at a faster pace, which was exactly what they needed to be ready.

One morning, after they’d walked Maeve back to her house, Catherine proposed that they all keep going to Pacific Heights.

“I think I need some extra work. Since I haven’t been playing tennis frequently, I’ve let things slip. I fear I’m slowing Maeve down.”

“My aunt has been a walker for years,” Ryan said, “and she pushes Caitlin around the hills of Noe Valley almost as easily as I do. But you’re keeping up, Catherine. I don’t think you’re going to have difficulty with this walk at all.”

“I need some work on hills, so I’m going to start walking over to pick Maeve up instead of driving.”

“And it’s good for the environment, too,” Ryan said. They kept walking, approaching a fairly steep hill. They were all quiet as they climbed, and it took Catherine a minute to catch her breath after they crested it.

“Well, I made it. But I think there are two more between here and my house.”

“At least two,” Jamie said. “When I first started coming over here to see Ryan, only her irresistible charm kept me coming back. These hills almost sent me right back home.”

“We can take the bus home,” Ryan said, smiling sweetly.

“You just say that because there isn’t a direct bus, and you know I won’t want to change three times to get home.”

“That might have played a part in my decision-making process before making the offer.” She put her arm around Jamie’s shoulders and gave her a squeeze

“I know what would make the time fly by,” Catherine said. “Ryan and I can have an argument.”

Ryan stared at her, clearly puzzled. “Do we have many arguments?”

“No, but I don’t often try to give you money.”

“Money? Why would you want to give me money?”

“Because of the enormous sums you saved me by urging me to get out of tech stocks. I was clearly overly invested, a scheme the so-called experts pushed me into.”

Ryan waved her hand. “That was just dumb luck. The person who convinced me was my father, so you can try to get him to take a cut.” She laughed. “Good luck with that.”

“That's not true,” Catherine said. “Your thesis, or your project—whatever you call it—told you very clearly that the market was too high and it was time to sell. Don’t act like that didn’t happen,” Catherine said, waving her finger near Ryan’s face.

“No, it happened. But I kept thinking that I was wrong. It was just a projection, and those are wrong so often it’s not funny. It was really my father who made me step back and look at things in a way that an outsider would.
