6) Repent and keep on repenting.

The Protestant Reformation began with Martin Luther nailing his Ninety-five Theses to the Wittenberg church doors; the first line of the theses reads, “Our Lord and Master Jesus Christ . . . willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.” Luther’s point is that repentance is not only the first step, but every step of the Christian life.

Since behavior is based on belief, we must repent of any lies we believe, because behind every sin is a lie.19 Therefore, any change in our behavior has to start with a change in the thinking of our mind.20 Repentance is first a change of our mind about who is in charge (God, not us), what is and is not sin, and how we are to worship God in all of life. Any attempt to change behavior without repentance in the mind is simply doomed to fail. The only way to change people’s mind in a helpful way is through applying the Scriptures to their life and sin. Changed behavior is the fruit, or result, of repentance that begins in the mind.

This should include considering in detail your history of sexual sin and taking time to repent to God of all you have done. See your sexual sin in its totality as God does. This should also include confessing your past sexual sin to your fiancèe or spouse so that there is nothing hidden in your past that would cause you to think wrongly about your sexuality. This should also include confessing any sexual sin committed against you, such as molestation or rape, and getting biblical counseling so that you can be freed from any lies that you believe about sex and your own worth as God’s image bearer. This is what John Piper meant when he once said, “Theology can conquer biology.” So the following questions are offered to help you uncover any repentance that needs to begin in your mind.

What lies do you believe about your body?

Do you believe that the sexual parts are dirty, less holy, or somehow shameful?

Do you believe that it is okay to strut your sexuality and flaunt your body for attention?

What lies do you believe about sex?

Do you view sex as if you were an animal enslaved to your base desires?

Do you view sex as dirty rather than as something that a Christian should enjoy?

Do you believe sex is only for functional purposes such as procreation or taking care of your spouse?

Do you believe that your sexual sin is not a big deal or does not hurt anyone because it is private or just in your mind?

What lies do you believe about your past?

Do you not believe that you are really forgiven in Jesus Christ for any and all of your past sexual sin?

Do you believe that what you have done or what has been done to you means that you are damaged forever and that you simply will never be sexually healthy?

Do you believe that because you
