CHAPTER SEVEN
JAX PULLED HIS motorcycle into the parking lot of the station house, working hard to wipe what he knew was a silly ass grin off his face. But damn, it was tough. He couldnât remember being this happy in a long time. He only wished there was some way he could have taken today off and spent it with Skye, but he couldnât. The station work schedule had been screwed up enough the last few days.
After that practically transcendent experience in the horse barn followed by a quickie in the shower, he and Skye had gone into the city for her meeting with the loan officer at the bank. While he swigged coffee at the Starbucks next door sweating bullets, worrying about whether sheâd get the loan, sheâd walked in cool as a cucumber and knocked them dead. The bank had been very receptive to her business plan and was working up a contract for her to look at later in the week.
Afterward, heâd taken her out to dinner to celebrate, then theyâd gone back to the ranch to hang out. When Skye had changed out of her suit and into a skimpy pair of shorts and a tank top, heâd been all set to strip them off her, but sheâd talked him into helping her make cupcakes instead. Jax wasnât an expert when it came to baking, but heâd helped out as much as he could. Heâd made more of a mess than anything else, but Skye didnât seem to mind, especially when he covered her nipples in frosting and licked it off.
He stifled a groan as he parked his bike and cut the engine. Now that image would have him hard all day.
Jax did his best to act like it was just like any other day at work, except for the part where he avoided Dane as much as he could. He was surprisingly successful, mostly since it seemed Dane was trying to do the same thing. They rolled on two traffic accidents and a Dumpster fire, all without saying a word to each other. They even handled the post-response equipment clean-up without any trouble, then dinner later in the day.
But the station was too small to tiptoe around each other forever and after theyâd finished eating, Dane cornered him upstairs in the sleeping area, asking him what the hell was going on between Jax and his sister.
Jax clenched his jaw as he stared at the wall above the bed. He thought about lying for a moment, then said screw it. This needed to come out, and now was as good a time as any.
He turned and faced his friend, looking him squarely in the eye. âIf youâre asking if weâre romantically involved, then yeah, weâre seeing each other.â
Daneâs fist clenched at his side, and Jax tensed, ready if his friend started throwing haymakers. But after a long time, Dane just shook his head.
âDammit Jax, sheâs my sister.â
âIâm well aware of that fact, believe me,â Jax said. âBut sheâs also a grown woman who can make decisions for herself.
