GISELA

I genuinely wanted to cook for tonight’s party for all the Alphas and their advisors—I had cooked for parties for my old pack, and it was one of the few times where I felt appreciated. But I had a bigger, more irrational reason to stay hidden in the kitchen.

What if one of the Alphas recognized me? The part of me that was thinking clearly knew it was a stretch, but the other part of me wasn’t convinced.

Xander wouldn’t be attending, since Alabama was not part of Dex’s region. However, Xander had all kinds of guests coming through our town, and some of them might have been from this territory. And maybe Xander had notified all of his friends that I’d cut and run.

I let out a breath, resting my hands on my hips and trying to get a hold of myself. I had to focus, or I’d mess up the food. We had spent hours in the prep kitchen yesterday and earlier today making a four-course meal. It was a semi-formal event, more of an icebreaker from what I could tell. The Alphas had arrived today, staying in the guest quarters spread across the compound, and they were having a big meeting tomorrow.

“I wonder what this is about,” Eileen, another cook, commented.

“What do you mean?” I asked, stirring soup.

“All of these Alphas and their advisors coming. And just them, no one else.” She set out bowls for us to fill and garnish. “Isn’t it strange? What could they possibly be meeting about?”

“I don’t know.”

But Dex was stressed out about it, whatever it was. He came to me in the evenings when he got in from his headquarters, kissing me senseless and telling me he was fine when we both knew he wasn’t. My throat tightened at the memory of that Alpha moments from shifting, only stopped by Dex’s powerful command. And he didn’t bat an eye at how shaken I was, assuming I was worried about what I saw.

Something big was happening.

I grabbed a clean spoon and tasted the pumpkin sage soup I had made. Perfect. I ladled a serving into each of the bowls that Eileen had put out, cleaned up soup that had splattered on the sides of the bowl, and added some freshly toasted pumpkin seeds as garnish. Since Dex loved those, I made sure the waiter who was tasked with serving him took a bowl with plenty of them. Waiters swooped in and took everything away.

We got started on the next course, which was mostly prepped—we just had to sear the steaks that we’d cooked using a sous-vide earlier. But that left me with too much time to think. Was Dex in danger? He could fight off anyone, couldn’t he? A fight wouldn’t break out in the middle of dinner, but I still worried.

I helped to plate up the main course when it was time, meticulously placing each steak after it had rested. I snuck Dex an extra steak since it was his favorite, and the waiter took it away, leaving me with idle hands again.
