Chapter Thirty-Two

BERN

“You’re shivering,” Bern said quietly.

Lacey opened her eyes and looked up at him.

“Are you worried about what happened at the Genesis?” he asked, remembering how badly she had been shaking right after that.

“I’m just cold,” Lacey murmured.

Bern scooted toward her and lay down beside her. “Here,” he said, extending his arm.

For a moment, he thought she wouldn’t come to him. But then she rolled toward him and rested her head on his shoulder. “Thanks,” she murmured.

“No problem.”

Her leg wrapped around his. It was an intimate gesture. Her hand slid across his stomach—

Bern inhaled sharply.

Lacey froze.

“You’re turning me on, you know,” he said.

“Oh, God,” she breathed. “I’m sorry.” She started to pull away.

He held onto her. “You don’t have to stop.”

“I didn’t mean to—I don’t know what I’m doing. I’ve only ever been with one guy.”

“Yeah, the one who dumped you, right?”

“I don’t want to talk about him.”

“I don’t want to talk about him either.” Bern looked at her. “I’ve had my eye on you, you know?”

“You have?”

“Wouldn’t have thought I could find a wolf so sexy.”

She blushed furiously. “I’m...well, I’m actually half bear.”

“You’re kidding.”

“My father.”

Bern propped himself up on his elbow and stroked her face, taking in her features. “That makes sense,” he said. “I’ve never thought you looked exactly...wolflike.”

She blushed harder.

“I mean it as a compliment,” he said quickly.

“I can’t help what I am,” she said. “This is why my pack threw me out.”

“Oh,” Bern said. His heart twisted. He could understand the feeling of being turned away from your home—your family—because of something you couldn’t help.

But his attraction to her did make more sense now. Half bear...of course she was. That explained the pull he had been feeling toward her, growing stronger and stronger, from the moment they’d met.

She was staring into his eyes now, as if searching for something, and with a feeling that he was giving in to a force much stronger than himself, Bern leaned toward her and kissed her.

She let out a whimper and leaned into him, and Bern felt immediately as if a fire had been lit between them. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her on top of him.

Her hands moved between them, fumbling with the button on his pants. Bern lifted his hips so that she could slide them down. His heart was beating madly. He knew that Dov could come back at any moment—but he won’t, he’s standing guard, he wouldn’t leave his post—

Her hand wrapped around his cock and began to stroke.

Bern stuffed his own fingers in his mouth to keep himself quiet. He ran the other hand up along her thigh, learning the shape of her, aching for more of her.

He couldn’t take it.

He rolled her over, grabbed her pants, and whipped them down to her ankles. She kicked one leg free and lay spread before him, waiting.

He stroked himself slowly, looking at her. He shuddered.

He’d never felt like this before. It wasn’t just that he wanted her—he didn’t think he had the power to walk away from this.
