I woke suddenly, something pulling me out of sleep in a way that was rougher than usual. Harder to resist, too. A need for something burned deep in my gut, for the physical connection I’d only just begun to explore. Moving on nothing but instinct, I reached for my new mate. For my Red, whose scent lingered all around me. For the warm body that had brought mine so much pleasure.

What I found instead was an empty bed.

My reindeer immediately howled his dismay, both of us moving from sleep into full panic in a blink. I was on my feet in a second, brain clear and heart pounding as I raced down the hall. Ruby was gone. Gone. What was I going to do? How was I going to find her? What if she was in danger? What—

“Hey.” Her sweet voice coming from across the room when I rushed into the kitchen immediately soothed me. Okay, so maybe I hadn’t been completely awake until then. Maybe I had been thinking I was living a nightmare. Or maybe I was so terrified of losing what I’d only just found that even her being out of bed for a few moments had stirred up the wild inside me.

My reindeer and I might have needed to relax a bit.

“You lost, sweet girl? The bed’s this way.” My voice came out cool and calm, almost completely normal. I was damned proud that I didn’t sound like the raving lunatic I’d just been. Still, I couldn’t help but hurry toward her. Couldn’t stop my feet from crossing the floor as quickly as possible. I didn’t want to be away for a second longer than I needed to be.

Ruby simply smiled over her shoulder at me. “Not lost—just nosy. I couldn’t sleep, so I came out here.” She tugged a book off the shelf, turning it over. Wrinkling her nose adorably. “So, do you actually like Hemingway, or is this some sort of showpiece?”

“Empty books. My shelves are filled with them.” I chuckled when her startled eyes met mine. “Kidding. I actually like reading Hemingway, though he can be a bit dry.”

“Indeed. You’re naked, you know.”

“And you’re not. We should fix that.”

She chuckled, putting the book back on the shelf, rising onto the balls of her feet to reach another. The shirt she wore—my shirt—rode up those luscious thighs of hers, teasing me. Giving me a bit of a show.

One I wanted more of.

“So, you couldn’t sleep,” I said as I moved closer, crowding her. Sensing her body come alive as mine made contact. “And instead of waking me up to entertain you, you came out here to judge my book collection.”

“Somebody has to keep you in line.”

She wasn’t wrong there. “And you think the way to do that is to insult what I read?”

“No.” She turned, pressing her back against the shelves and grabbing my biceps. “I think the way to do that is to figure you out. Once I know you, I’ll know how to handle you.
