God, Sarah was lethal. She had organised him into this tour of the paintings alone with Elizabeth Martin and extracted him from the company of the Misses Fry all in one breath. And now she was waylaying them with a long monologue on the wonders of Goldings and barely giving them a chance to break in with their own questions.

He was free at least for the next half an hour, free to take Elizabeth on a tour of the house without interruption.

He could not believe his luck.

She, however, looked tentative as laughter echoed after them.

‘It is a rule that some ladies follow, I think. If one laughs loud enough and long enough, Mrs Martin, one might make an impression. I sadly fear it is the wrong one.’

At this she did smile. ‘I suppose they are young, my lord?’

‘And you, on the other hand, are ancient?’

She stopped at that and looked at him.

‘Sometimes I feel it. Sometimes I even wonder if I was ever that young in the first place, that happy, that mindless, that carefree.’

‘I know what you mean. As the heir to Goldings, I have a lot of responsibility.’

‘The title, you mean—being an earl?’

‘And an only son.’

‘When did your father die?’

‘When I was twenty-three. If there is such a thing as dying of a broken heart I think it would apply to him.’

‘He was remorseful?’

‘Very, for my last conversations with him were all apologies and regret.’

‘At least you have that to remember him by, my lord, which must be a comfort. My late husband, on the other hand, apologised for nothing at all.’
