PUSHING THE ENVELOPE To create the successful automated world of the Boeing plant in Everett, WA, a building of a volume never seen before outside of the drawings of Boullée had to be created. The total volume of the plant is estimated at 472.4 million cubic feet. (Images: Leonard de Selva/Corbis, Boeing.)

The fabrication of certain modules may begin off site as much as 14 to 16 months in advance of delivery. This assembly tactic allowed even the earliest aircraft to be fabricated at the point of final assembly in 123 days. By 1997, the time had been cut to 38 days. With the reduction in time have come substantial savings in the cost of production.
