Chapter 7

The Search

I was worried about a sister I didn’t know and had never met. Until recently I’d had no idea of her existence at all. I needed to talk to my parents, they had to know more than I did. I was just reluctant to go around them while I was still in heat and my dad and Reese had never been on the best of terms. There was a lot to overcome before Reese and I could have a stable solid relationship in the wolf community. I never thought I would need to be accepted here as anything but the alpha’s daughter. I knew I would have to fight for my right to be at Reese’s side politically. I’d had basic self-defense training, Dad had insisted on that, but I’d never been a scrapper.

My siblings, at least my wolf siblings were all fighters. It came with the territory when your father was a leader. You had to learn to fight or learn to put up with bullies because being the alpha’s kid put a target on your back. I had avoided that to some degree because I was human. It was established early on that if you messed with me, the rules governing contact with humans would be invoked and serious consequences would be visited upon them. No one was allowed to hurt humans if Dad knew about it. His view was only the biggest cowards messed with those weaker than they were. It was lucky for me that those big cowards were scared of him and my brothers or my youth would have been miserable.

I was excited that Reese had finally opened up about himself a little. I knew his reputation, bad, but I knew few details and no history. He was the toughest and the baddest but no one ever said why. His name was spoken in hushed whispers as if they were afraid he’d hear and deal harshly with them. I had finally heard what was probably the first of the stories that told how he’d come to be so feared. Wolves avoided bears yet he’d fought one to save a child. I was impressed and it made me want to take him upstairs and worship him. It was a primitive reaction but I didn’t care.

I worked hard to get my mind back on my sister and pay attention to the conversation. I wanted to discover my blood family and my roots. I needed to know more about being a red wolf and what did that mean exactly? What could I do and how could I learn to do it? Jim could tell me a little but it was just speculation. It would be a start and I would test things out and see if his information was good or not. He had been right about me being a red wolf. He’d also been right about them possessing certain powers. That was what I needed to know more about.

I steadied myself and started paying attention to the conversation.
