CHAPTER NINE

Kegan continued healing the parts of Brietta he could reach, and he was so focused on his task he didn’t notice when one hockey game ended and another started.

Once a thorough search of visible flesh proved he’d done all he could, he summoned his satchel and dug inside, blindly bypassing the cluttered contents until the tip of his forefinger dipped into a delicate band. Pulling the ring free, he tossed aside his bag, and after magically cleaning blood from the crevices and gems, he carefully slipped the heirloom on Brietta’s third finger.

For a while, he just held her hand and stared at the ring, thinking about what it represented, how close they came to losing it, and the distances he’d go to stay with the woman who wore it.

When another game ended and the screen filled with the smiling faces of morning talk show hosts, Kegan glanced at the window, finding a sliver of sunlight seeping through the curtains. His thoughts turned to Alec and the other refugees, his heart hoping they survived to watch the sun rise. Then he shook away the negativity and summoned a notepad and pen.

After jotting down a reminder to add Aradia to his will, he racked his brain for several minutes, trying to recall if Luther or Tucker had mentioned their surnames. Nothing came to mind, so he sighed and wrote down their first names.

He spent the next few hours figuring out ways to honor those who’d sacrificed their lives for him, adding notes to the wedding plans, considering the scary future, and zoning out on sports he cared nothing about. Brietta’s calm pulse fluttered against his thigh as her steady breaths whispered into his side, keeping him awake and sane, but when other hotel patrons started slamming doors, her peaceful slumber shattered.

It started with a twitch, then another. Then her chest heaved as her nails dug into his stomach. He jolted, hissing through the pain as her feet kicked out, and his notes fell to the floor as he reached for her arm. The moment he touched her, a scream tore from her throat, and he rushed to cast a silencing spell while shouting her name. Her eyes popped open as she bolted upright, shedding his numbing spells while frantically searching her surroundings. Then she dropped her face into her hands and cried.

Kegan scooted closer, wrapping an arm around her waist as he touched his lips to her head, but he didn’t say anything. He had nothing useful to say, no way to erase the memories or end the pain. All he could do was hold her through it, provide a safe place to mourn and hope it would help her heal.

When her cries softened and settled, she took a deep breath and slowly let it out. “I’m sorry. Did I wake you?”

“No. Do you want to talk about it?”

“Not really. You were there.”

While wiping her face, she noticed the ring on her finger, and another sob shuddered her chest as she made a tight fist.
