We made our way back to the cabin, hand in hand, like we were some human couple out on a romantic midnight stroll, instead of enemies-turned-lovers stumbling back in after a night of making rigorous love against every tree in a five-mile radius.

“Should I dye my hair?” she asked, pulling twigs from her tangled locks.

I slammed on the brakes, yanking her back with me. “Absolutely not,” I snarled, my fingers tightening around her wrist.

She shook off my hold and flipped the hair in question over her shoulder. “I just thought it might help with us staying off the radar. I could get colored contacts too,” she added, ignoring my growl.

I buried my hand in her long red locks, watching them dance around my fingers like living flames. I knew she was right, her hair and eyes were flashing beacons to anyone hunting for her, but still…

“No,” I finally said, shaking my head. “You will not change yourself.”

I turned her so she faced me. “Do you understand, Giselle? I won’t allow you to lose yourself through all of this. I never want to see your fire dimmed, not even temporarily. Not by your people, not by mine, and most certainly not by me. I love you just the way you are.”

She gave a small nod, moisture lining her eyes. Stretching up on her toes, she brushed her lips over mine and I wrapped my arms around her, holding her small body tightly to mine, her natural heat radiating through me.

“I love you,” she whispered, and a different kind of warmth spread throughout my chest. “The past few days have been the happiest in my many lifetimes. I just wish we could stay in this moment forever.”

“Forever wouldn’t be nearly long enough,” I said, pressing my lips to her temple. “But we can stay for another week.”

Her smile could have lit up the entire forest. She squeaked, bouncing up and down in front of me. “Really?”

“But the first sign of trouble and we are getting out of here, understood?”

She bit back her smile, nodding like one of those bobbly objects humans liked to keep on their car dashes. “Of course,” she agreed, throwing herself into my arms. Her lips crashed into mine, wrapping herself around me until my blood was once again flowing south.

Her fingers plunged into my hair and I gripped the hem of her sweater, inching the still-damp fabric higher as her tongue tangled with mine. I would never get enough of this wicked creature.

An annoying buzzing sound filled the night air and Giselle groaned, pulling out of my arms. “My brother has impeccable timing,” she muttered, yanking her phone from where she had it tucked in the pocket of her leggings. “What?” she snapped into the device before it was fully to her ear.

She paused before her face scrunched. “What do you mean, am I okay?” she asked and my guard instantly went up. “I clearly answered, didn’t I? Now, if you don’t mind, I was about to be a hell of a lot better.
