Chapter Fifteen

Ahmes was shocked and thrilled when Raphael returned and, without hesitation, hugged him. He’d been sitting on one of the porch swings with Josh, waiting for their return. Xavier had texted saying they were on their way back, and anxiety gnawed. But now it all faded as he held Raphael safely in his arms. He noticed the damp clothing, the scent of sweat, and didn’t mind in the least.

He met Xavier’s gaze over Raphael’s head, knowing his question was in his eyes.

Xavier smiled, nodded, and accepted Josh’s hug. They spoke in low voices before Josh tugged on Xavier’s hand.

“We’re going to wash up before getting lunch. Afterward, we can reconvene. Does that work?”

“That’s fine,” Raphael said.

Xavier chuckled at Josh’s persistence to get him inside. The door shut behind them. Ahmes pulled back, and Raphael smiled at him, his eyes clear and bright without shadows dogging them.

“It went well,” Ahmes said.

Raphael grinned. “Better than.” He squeezed him for a moment before letting go. “But I need a shower too. I feel gross.”

Ahmes snorted. “You and me both. Did some free labor for our hosts. I’m sore.”

They reached their rooms and separated. Ahmes didn’t miss the way they both hesitated to glance at the other before enclosing themselves inside. He took a quick shower, contemplating what to do now. His conversation with Josh repeated in his mind, making him question his motives again and again. But every time he became more certain that his love grew from respect and friendship, not a need to be a savior. It relieved him even as it worried him. If Raphael felt the same about him… then what was holding them back? The age difference still bugged him and the differences in life experience. Yet weren’t those petty reasons to deny happiness? What if he’d found his mate and then lost him through uncertainty?

His cat yowled in denial.

Ahmes grimaced.

Raphael was waiting for him outside their rooms. As they walked down the hallway, Raphael took his hand and ducked his head. Ahmes squeezed and didn’t let go. They headed downstairs holding hands.

Once they got their food, Ahmes spotted Xavier waving at them. They sat with Josh and Xavier at a table in the corner and Ahmes was pleasantly surprised when Josh spoke about Haven, barely stopping to breathe let alone eat. Xavier glanced frequently at his mate, adoration warming his gaze to the point that Ahmes felt as if he were intruding on an intimate moment.

Raphael listened intently, and Ahmes couldn’t stop his own glances. He wondered if his gaze showed adoration. He wasn’t sure if he wanted it to or not. He wasn’t sure of much at that moment, only that he wanted to stay by Raphael’s side as long as possible.

“When you get the chance, I encourage you both to take a stroll through Haven,” Josh said. “It has a lot of fun little shops, theaters that play old and new movies, and several bars. Most of them even have karaoke nights.”

Josh glanced slyly at Xavier who just smiled and shook his head.
