Chapter 8

It was impossible. Finding the best lover in the world crash landed in her remote mountain lake was one thing. Finding out he was an alien, okay. Discovering he was a demon… Well, she’d had worse shocks. But he. Was. A. Dragon.

Or as close to a dragon as she’d ever seen in real life, which admittedly wasn’t saying much. In La La Land, she’d hung out with some CG animators, and she knew a little about the tricks of that trade. But he was nothing like that.

He was as beautiful and atavistically dangerous as the fire. Now she understood how he could touch it, revel in it. Nothing was burning—yet—but the hypnotizing flicker of firelight played within the overlapping scales as if he was made of flame. A delicious heat filled the darkness around him, pushing back the winter night, and it seemed to create a vacuum that pulled her closer despite her wobbling knees.

His head, even resting on the ground was imposing, as long as her forearm, and the slitted scarlet eye closest to her was as big as her hand. It fixed on her with unblinking intensity. As for the rest of him, he was bigger than the horses that still sometimes clomped down Sunset Falls’ Main Street on rodeo days, but there was a cat-like sleekness to the long, powerful body, right down to the lashing tail that thrashed up twin miniature snow devils behind him.

Despite his watchful stillness, that restless twitch reminded her that they were being hunted. She’d seen that blaster weapon blow a chunk out of the porch rail, and she wasn’t willing to lose the rest of the cabin. Or herself, for that matter.

He chuffed, quietly but urgently, and ruffled his wings. The wide vanes of the membranes were scaled but almost translucent and shimmered like a butterfly wing. But the amount of cold night air they whirled around her told her how strong they were.

Strong enough to carry her away…

“Yeah, I kinda guessed that’s where this was going.” Tentatively, she reached out to touch the frill of spikes above his brow ridges that continued like a mohawk mane halfway down his neck. Growing up in Montana, she knew snakes weren’t slimy; still, the sleek warmth of his scales surprised her and sent a frisson of delight through her fingertips.

Maybe he felt it too, because the rumble he made was very much like a purr. The jewel-bright eye closed for a moment, and she couldn’t help but stroke her hand past the frill, petting.

He arched his neck, half lifting his big head off the ground, which reminded her that Honey was now a Big Fucking Dragon. Her petting hand faltered, and his eye opened.

He nudged her with his snout, sending her staggering a step toward his shoulder.

“Okay, I get it. Time to go.” She swallowed hard.

He angled his front leg so that the elbow formed a convenient step to his back. Which seemed very, very far off the ground.

Letting out a tremulous breath, she crouched to grab the fringed blanket that had been around his waist.
