Chapter Eight

Orion’s job was to keep an eye on Caven, but even if he’d been allowed to, he wouldn’t have been able to look away from the dragon. Watching him working over the leaders sitting around the table with him was awe-inspiring, no matter how much Orion didn’t like to admit it.

He wanted to hate Caven, and he did. Caven was a traitor, and he deserved to be treated as one instead of being brought in on the meeting of clans and talked to as if he was the one on the throne.

But the queen didn’t seem to mind. She sat next to her cousin, seemingly at peace. When someone had a question for her, she answered it, but she allowed Caven to lead the meeting for the rest.

They’d gathered the leaders who had demanded to talk to him, and they were all around the table today, with their envoys and inner circles—including Bergen, who kept glaring at Orion and Nithe—lining the walls. Orion didn’t care if Bergen hated him. He didn’t care about anything but keeping the queen safe.

He and Nithe weren’t the only guards in the room. Even Morven and Orran were there, silent as they listened. Orion was sure that as soon as the meeting was over, they’d have many things to discuss.

“I do believe my cousin is doing a good job,” Orion heard Caven say.

The man who’d arrived with Bergen snorted loudly. Orion had to resist the urge to slap King Sigmund upside the head.

“You didn’t think she was doing a good job when you tried taking her place several times.”

Caven didn’t seem offended by the king’s words. He linked his fingers together on top of the table they were sitting around, looking at peace. “I won’t deny that I thought she was making some mistakes, especially by allowing two humans to move in with us. I’m sure you can understand the kind of prejudice I had against them, considering our complicated history. But I can’t deny they’ve become Ogorth clan members. The only difference between them and us is that they’re not dragons. They’re building families, and I suspect they might be helpful when we have to deal with the humans.”

“Why do we have to deal with humans at all?” another king grunted out.

Orion remembered the names of all the leaders around the table. He’d made a point of learning them. He wished he hadn’t had to, because they were dickheads, but he supposed it made sense, since they’d demanded to have Caven at the meeting with them. They wouldn’t have talked to the queen if she hadn’t agreed, and it was a relief to see that Caven was behaving.

“Well, the cat is out of the bag now,” Caven drawled. “Or, as it is, the dragon. There’s no taking back what the humans know, which means we’ll have to deal with them. I’m sure you have televisions in your clan, so you’ll know that some of the humans are trying to find us. We can only imagine what they’ll do when they manage, and we need to be ready for that.
