Chapter 23

It was useless arguing with her, she couldn’t understand. Try as I might to explain why I wanted to her to check on Camilla, she wouldn’t hear it. Every one of these vampires were so full of themselves, truly just self-serving narcissistic sociopaths.

“Whatever,” I said as I pushed my palm to her face before I reached for the door to the entrance hall. I’d had enough of her non-answers and incessant dodging of subjects. “I’ll go check on her myself.”

“Heather,” she said as I tried to slam the door closed to her face. An ease of the hand from her, and my full strength being stopped by the barest of nudge from her, I had to leave her to walk after me and continue on with her empty warnings. “Miss, Heather. I can’t let you go up there.”

Hand pushing to the stair guardrail, finding the step to look down from even higher height, I turned back to argue some more. “Oh yeah?” I asked with condescension. “I’ll see what Camilla thinks of everyone keeping me from checking up on her. What was your name again?”

“You’ve never asked.” I didn’t care. Hand pushing to my hip, I waited for her to answer. “Selene.”

“Well, Selene, I’ll make sure to mention your name when she wakes up.” The threat had been an empty one, it was just a gamble to have her reconsider. Two steps further up and she had been waiting for me, arms crossed. “Get out of the way.”

“The headmaster gave instructions for us to stay downstairs.”

Exasperating as I took that final step before her, I came up to meet her stare with a glare, meeting her small frame at eye level from the previous step. “I will tell her,” I threatened again, my last gamble.

She only chuckled.

“I’m serious!” I snapped back

“You have no idea how little that means,” she said. “She’ll be more upset at the Headmaster for having me watching over you.”

I didn’t really understand what she meant, I didn’t care either. “Move!” I yelled.

A click to the latch of the door to Camilla’s room and we both glanced to check. The thundering steps should have tipped me off, but the hulking body propping through the opening to the top of the stairs gave it away, Nicholas had came out, and I put our showdown on hold.

“Headmaster,” Selene said.

“What is the meaning of all this shouting?” he asked.

I knew the question had been meant for me, I was the only one yelling, but I still glanced the maid’s way before answering. The explanation stuck in the back of my throat with my instinct to excuse my actions for the more pressing issue. Dismissing his question with a shake of the head, I asked, “how is she?”

Holding his condescending expression for a little too long, I had the sudden urge to yank him down from that balcony, but luckily for him, it was only a feint as his smile returned. Stepping aside, he made way for Camilla to approach from behind.
