The witch’s apartment was a bust. Empty. Even scoured of magical residual, according to Fish. The single room boasted a bed — sheets still rumpled — and a tiny bathroom.

I pointed to the bed and raised an eyebrow at Fish. “So you got laid at least.”

He frowned, checking the single window. “More like passed out.”

“And then she … left you? And you made it almost all the way back to our hotel without realizing it?”

“Nope. There was at least one car ride in between those two points.”

Using drugs on any of the Five was unreliable. The rest of us didn’t have Emma’s metabolism, but someone pretty much had to overdose us to keep us down or wipe our memories.

Fish was tapping the walls now, looking for hidden niches.

“It’s a safe house,” I said, hands on my hips and already itching to move on.

He grunted, not disagreeing as he tugged up a corner of the carpet, then opened a trapdoor set in the underfloor. It revealed a storage space just large enough to hold a few items. “Empty.”

“So … they aren’t as stupid as they seem.”

He sat back on his heels, thinking. “Why attack you so pathetically?”

I shrugged a shoulder.

Fish stood, crossing past me and into the bathroom. He flicked on the light.

“I checked in there,” I said pissily.

He ignored me. Like always.

I considered pulling out my phone and checking Knox’s text. Or maybe playing a game.

Fish stepped out from the bathroom, glowering. “Clean.”

“We grab our stuff from the hotel and leave,” I said.

“We reach out to my contact.” His tone was dark. “And when we confirm he sold us out, we hunt him down.”

I sighed, heavily.

“Got something better to do?” Fish asked caustically.

I smirked. “Well, Emma might want some help with the wedding.”

He stomped away.
