Chapter 21

Bianca

“Wake up, my sweet, succulent twins!”

I bolted upright at the hot breath on my cheek, fist flying upward instinctively. Jesse yelped as I caught him on the face, and he reeled back slightly, though my blow was mostly inept. I was half-asleep, and the darkness had hindered my aim, not that I was particularly trained for combat.

“What are you doing in here?” I demanded, covering my sister, who slowly woke at my side.

I could feel Dahlia’s concern palpitating as she raised her blonde head, dark eyes shining in the blackness. Suddenly, the trailer was flooded with light, and I saw that Jesse was not alone, which filled me with a sense of relief. Surely, he wouldn’t attack us with a crowd… right?

Who knew what he was capable of?

“I’ve come to take you to a much better environment,” he declared. “With less than a week before our nuptials, it’s high time that you see what awaits you in my palace, don’t you think?”

I couldn’t help myself. I snorted loudly.

“Your palace?” I repeated. “Is that what you call your shit house?”

Jesse’s smile froze, and he pushed his face closer toward me.

“You forget yourself, girlie,” he hissed, spit hitting my face. “I am your one true sire, your lord and master. You would do well to remember what I can do to you if I stop liking you and your sister so much. What will happen if my patience with you runs thin?”

“What do you want from us?” Dahlia interjected, trying to end our face-off.

Jesse turned his weasel face toward her, eyes brightening at her quivering question.

“Just what I said. To show you what kind of life waits for you. Gather whatever things you have. You’re moving into the palace.”

I noticed how he faltered with the word now that I’d mocked him, but he did get off the bed, allowing me to breathe easier, even if his words instilled more fear in me.

“No… we’re good here,” I insisted, darting a look at my twin. “We don’t want to go anywhere.”

Jesse laughed jovially, but it was forced.

“Don’t be ridiculous, girl. You have no idea what pleasures and treats you’ll find inside my home. The other wives love their turns inside.”

“We’re not your wives,” I shot back indignantly.

Jesse scowled. “You will be.”

“But we’re not yet,” I insisted. “It’s improper to bring us in. Aren’t you worried about… you know… diseases?”

Jesse’s jaw twitched, and Dahlia nudged me hard.

“What are you saying, girl?”

I understood he wasn’t entirely sure which twin I was, and I would have laughed if I weren’t so stressed out. We couldn’t go with him inside the palace. Escaping from within those walls would be much more difficult under his eye constantly, and I was sure that the guards in the palace were more on the ball than the ones roaming the outer walls. My mind’s eye had developed a plan to sneak out with Dahlia a night or two before the wedding, but now…

“Come on, girlies. The palace awaits!” Jesse cried, too loudly for my liking.
