I’d been in my clothes for more than a day and even though I’d swam, I needed new underwear and a fresh t-shirt. I put my dirty clothes in the washing basket and pulled out fresh clothes from my closet. It was still shorts and t-shirt weather.

My sword was cradled against the side of my dresser. I pulled it out and let the fire ignite. I ran my hand down the length of the blade, careful not to touch the edge. There were a couple of nicks I’d have to work out. The flame transferred onto my fingertips. I let the flames dance on my skin. It tingled, like the sensation of tiny raindrops hitting your skin on a hot day. I pushed my wings out to their full extent. My room wasn’t big, so I almost hit the other side of the wall when I turned. I pulled my left wing around to the front to inspect the ‘feathers’. They were soft and left the same tingle on my hands. The flame leapt from my hands onto the wing both merging into a reddish yellow. Touching my wing was strange. As if it was part of me but separate. I let go and then tried to flap them. I knocked over the laundry basket and sent the little jars on my shelf clattering but not tumbling to the ground.

“Shit, shit,” I said.

Giggles erupted from the door behind me. I turned and rolled my eyes. Both little girls were there, pointing at my wings.

“I want to touch them,” Immy said.

I sighed and dropped to my knee. She reached out her fingertips and laughed when a flame danced on her fingers. Chloe reached out reluctantly as if she didn’t want to, but once Immy had done it she had to as well. She stroked her hand down the feathers. Flames danced over her palm and onto her wrists, then back to her fingers.

“That’s so awesome,” Chloe whispered to me.

“I know. I only got them. I don’t think they’re supposed to be on fire, but I was pretty mad when I made them,” I replied.

“It’s good to be mad,” Chloe said. “Bobby was mad for a long time, but he’s learned to be kind.”

The girls moved back, the fires leaping back to my wings before I folded them into my body.

“Does it hurt?” Chloe asked.

Immy shook her head. “It’s a part of who she is, she was scared at first to let them out, but now she’ll learn how to use them.”

“I’m right here,” I said with an exaggerated eye roll.

“You’re funny,” Chloe said, picking up the axe she’d brought with her. The one I’d given her a couple of nights ago. “How to I sharpen the edges?”

I smiled at her. “My dad’s the best in the area at that. I need to sharpen mine as well. But first. We have to harvest the nuts before the critters get them.”

“Nuts?” Chloe screwed her face up as if the word was distasteful.

Immy patted her on the arm.
