Chapter Fourteen

Karlee was once again standing in the mist. Her head was still spinning from Court’s admission that he’d protect her. She didn’t know what that meant really, but it had taken her breath away to hear it. It had sent happy tingles racing over her skin and rekindled the image of the sexy white knight that had saved her when she’d first met him. She guessed that any woman would be starstruck hearing a good-looking man say it.

It was all very distracting as Karlee tried to discover the powers that she should have. That was why she had to focus on the task at hand. Transforming the mist into a room. Her kitchen to be specific. “Court, I really don’t think I can do that,” she said after yet another failed attempt to change the lingering fog into the off-white walls of her memory.

“Keep trying. Just imagine the mist becoming the kitchen. Close your eyes if you have to, but I know you can,” Court said, from behind her. He’d hung back only a few steps to give her space, but Karlee was deeply aware that he was there, watching her every move.

Closing her eyes again, Karlee brought to mind the little island counter where they’d had coffee and the feel of the cold counter tops under her fingers. Holding her hand out, she wiggled her fingers in the air in front of her. For a second she could feel the smooth counter. Flattening her hand, Karlee snapped her eyes open only to watch the grey counter top vanish back into the mist. “Damnit,” she grumbled.

Court patted her shoulder and stepped up beside her. “It’s okay. It did start to form. That’s progress,” he said. He flashed her an encouraging smile and Karlee let out a deep breath and nodded. “Now, if you want, we can attempt something smaller. Try to just clear the mists away and create a path.”

Turning all her attention to the mist at her feet, Karlee pushed at the cloud with her mind. Her hands moved out, mimicking the mental image of the fog moving away. Slowly, the area began to clear as the mist receded. Below her feet, a stone path slowly appeared. Stepping forward, Karlee willed the path to continue. “It’s moving,” she said triumphantly, as the stones spread further. The new path only extended a few yards ahead of them before getting lost in the fog, but as she took a slow step forward, the mist moved further away too.

“Do you want to follow the path?” Court asked.

Looking up, Karlee watched the mist move further away and the path stretch out before her even more. “Yeah. Can I see where it leads?”

“Of course,” he answered and Karlee didn’t hesitate.

Following the stone path, Karlee felt excitement course through her. She didn’t know where she was going, but she felt wonderful that she had revealed the path at all. It was level beneath her feet and wide enough that she could barely make out an edge of grass on either side.
