Kelly walked back to Florence’s place feeling like a weight had lifted off her shoulders. She’d been feeling so bad about the way she’d freaked Timon out, and she’d thought he’d never want to talk to her again. But now she felt like they could be friends. And it was all because of her conversation with Aidan. He had more in common with her than she’d realized, and the knowledge made her feel less alone, less of a freak.

Aidan. She’d been thinking about him non-stop since yesterday. It had been so awful to see him covered in blood and teeth marks. And he’d been so tense and agitated. Well, if his family was really after him, she didn’t blame him. That was one of her greatest fears—that one day her own family would decide to come for her. The thought rolled through her stomach queasily.

She changed direction and walked toward Aidan’s house instead.

Remember how cool he was last time you turned up on his doorstep, a little voice reminded her. But she ignored it. He needed help, she felt that strongly. She passed through his neat front garden and tapped on his front door. There was no answer. She tried a second, and a third time. She sensed he was inside, but maybe he didn’t want to speak to anyone. She’d come back later, she decided, as she turned and retraced her steps to the street.

“Kelly,” came the deep, smooth voice that always sent a tingle through her body.

She turned around. Aidan was standing in his doorway in a pair of khaki shorts and a tattered white T-shirt. His eyes seemed haunted.

She went toward him, quickly, her heartbeat speeding up. “I just came to see how you were. If there was any news about your family,” she began.

He smiled at her, but his eyes stayed sad. “That was kind of you.”

She stopped two feet in front of him, her heart pounding. “Aidan I—”

She wasn’t sure what she’d been about to say. But suddenly it didn’t matter. She took one more step, and then another, and suddenly her arms were stretching up, pulling him down to her, and she was crushing her lips against his.

He growled, low in his throat, and put his arms around her, holding her close. His kiss was fierce, yearning, and blissful sensations went all the way through her. It was exciting, but somehow safe being in his arms. When the tip of his tongue brushed against hers, her desire ignited and her body cried out for him. She was dizzy, heady, like she could barely hold herself up.

As if sensing it, Aidan boosted her right off the ground, his big hands cupping her ass. She clung to him, her legs wrapping around his waist.

“I’m taking you inside,” he growled into her ear.

Alarm bells sounded in her head, but she ignored them. She wasn’t going to let rules dominate her life any longer.

“Okay,” she whispered.

Aidan carried her over to a sofa in the corner of his open plan kitchen/living room.
