Watch out for comprise

Comprise is a transitive verb and should never be preceded by is, was, etc., or followed by the word of. The following sentence is therefore wrong on two counts.

The meal was comprised of three courses. wrong

To help you avoid making these mistakes, think of it as meaning contain.

Comprehensible/comprehensive

Comprehensible means understandable.

Although the film was in French, the subtitles made it comprehensible to the English audience.

Comprehensive means including all aspects.

Before I went on holiday to Spain, I bought a comprehensive guide to the country.
