Even though I’d learned and understood all of that, somehow my excitement of having Little Buddy with our family took over so that I forgot. I forgot that some things are not forever. I had much to learn. I had to prepare my heart to be happy for Little Buddy whatever his plan became. And just as I’d promised myself from the moment I met him, I knew I’d be there for him. No matter what.

The boys had stayed with Kari and Zach for one and a half years. And then, after all that time, they had to leave. I realized I was supposed to be happy for them. They were going to have a forever family. And truthfully, I was happy for them. I was just sad for myself because I knew I’d miss them. I will never forget how painful it was when they left. As proof, I still have a pink area left from my empty spot. But because of this, I’ve learned that sometimes good things come about because of something sad—and I like to believe that is what happened with the boys. It was because the boys were to leave for their forever family that I was adopted. And despite our initial pain of saying goodbye to one another, it actually became a good situation for me as well as for the boys. I learned that like many things in life, it’s our perspective that adjusts our light meter. So just like Mom does with her camera during our photo shoots, I always try keeping my light meter adjusted to the brightest setting.

Even so, I did not want to think about the unknowns. I wasn’t sure I could live a single day without Little Buddy. Instead, I did my best to focus on the present—one day, one moment, one breath.
