That night, I met the boys at the North End Hotel for a bite to eat and a game of pool. Ten years ago, this was something we did every week, but with Isaac and me working shifts, Logan living overseas, Will buying and building up The Stop, and Luca leaving town then returning three months ago with a new girlfriend, we were lucky to do it once a month.

Isaac chalked his cue, leaned over the table, and took the break shot. I watched the balls roll around the table, noted the two that disappeared into one side and one corner pocket, then crossed my arms to wait my turn. Will leaned against a table along the wall, his head bent over his phone, but he put it down when Luca made his way back from the bar with a tray of drinks.

Will chose a glass and took a sip. “You haven’t told us much about what happened with Jess when you got back,” he said to Luca. “Just how fucked up are things these days?”

Luca grunted. “It’s not good, and it’s about to get worse.”

Jessica and Luca first got together when we were all eighteen years old. I’d been with Maggie for two years by then, and the four of us had spent a lot of time together. Three years ago, Luca decided to get out of the Bay and see how city life fit. I didn’t know why Jess didn’t go with him, but they broke up before he left. I never thought he’d come back, but he did—and not alone. His new girlfriend, Natasha, was nice enough, but she wasn’t Jess, and we were still a tight-knit crew.

The awkwardness of Luca moving back with a girlfriend had seeped its way into all our friendships with Jess, and the idea that it might get worse did not appeal to me at all. As Isaac straightened and forgot about taking his shot, and Will’s drink stalled halfway to his mouth, I guessed none of us had a good feeling about what was coming next.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked.

Luca ran a hand over his darkly stubbled jaw. “I’m going to ask Tash to marry me.”

The silence went a beat too long before I stuck out my hand. “Wow. That’s massive news. Congratulations.”

Isaac and Will said much the same thing, clapping Luca on the back and muttering their approvals, but we were poor actors.

“Jess is going to be devastated,” Isaac said, then he grimaced and rubbed at his face. “Not the right thing to say. Sorry. I don’t mean to shit on a happy moment. I just—”

“Don’t think I haven’t thought about it,” Luca cut in. “I care about Jess a lot. I always will, but Tash is the one.”

“Then we’re happy for you, man.” Will raised his glass, and we all followed. “To Luca and Natasha. We wish you a long life of shit-hot sex and a shit ton of kids.”

Luca choked on his beer. “Slow down. I’ll take the hot sex, but the rug rats can wait.
