That night, I met the boys at the North End Hotel for a bite to eat and a game of pool. Ten years ago, this was something we did every week, but with Isaac and me working shifts, Logan living overseas, Will buying and building up The Stop, and Luca leaving town then returning three months ago with a new girlfriend, we were lucky to do it once a month.
Isaac chalked his cue, leaned over the table, and took the break shot. I watched the balls roll around the table, noted the two that disappeared into one side and one corner pocket, then crossed my arms to wait my turn. Will leaned against a table along the wall, his head bent over his phone, but he put it down when Luca made his way back from the bar with a tray of drinks.
Will chose a glass and took a sip. âYou havenât told us much about what happened with Jess when you got back,â he said to Luca. âJust how fucked up are things these days?â
Luca grunted. âItâs not good, and itâs about to get worse.â
Jessica and Luca first got together when we were all eighteen years old. Iâd been with Maggie for two years by then, and the four of us had spent a lot of time together. Three years ago, Luca decided to get out of the Bay and see how city life fit. I didnât know why Jess didnât go with him, but they broke up before he left. I never thought heâd come back, but he didâand not alone. His new girlfriend, Natasha, was nice enough, but she wasnât Jess, and we were still a tight-knit crew.
The awkwardness of Luca moving back with a girlfriend had seeped its way into all our friendships with Jess, and the idea that it might get worse did not appeal to me at all. As Isaac straightened and forgot about taking his shot, and Willâs drink stalled halfway to his mouth, I guessed none of us had a good feeling about what was coming next.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â I asked.
Luca ran a hand over his darkly stubbled jaw. âIâm going to ask Tash to marry me.â
The silence went a beat too long before I stuck out my hand. âWow. Thatâs massive news. Congratulations.â
Isaac and Will said much the same thing, clapping Luca on the back and muttering their approvals, but we were poor actors.
âJess is going to be devastated,â Isaac said, then he grimaced and rubbed at his face. âNot the right thing to say. Sorry. I donât mean to shit on a happy moment. I justââ
âDonât think I havenât thought about it,â Luca cut in. âI care about Jess a lot. I always will, but Tash is the one.â
âThen weâre happy for you, man.â Will raised his glass, and we all followed. âTo Luca and Natasha. We wish you a long life of shit-hot sex and a shit ton of kids.â
Luca choked on his beer. âSlow down. Iâll take the hot sex, but the rug rats can wait.
