Chapter Nine

Recalling the story of Slaughter had given Anya nightmares for three nights in a row. It also kept her from traveling through the shortcut to Owen’s cabin by way of Slaughter Ridge. She wanted nothing to do with the beast. Her bear could fight savagely when angry or cornered, but no one was a match for Slaughter except for Biergon the Dead.

For a while after she and Ledger had unpaired, she hadn’t cared if she lived or died because of the shame and uncertainty. She’d been numb, but now? Her life was different, and she wanted to keep it.

The happiness she’d found with Owen had siphoned the recklessness from her.

Anya jogged down the porch stairs of the females’ cabin, humming as she went. It would be a long and crisp journey, but she was excited because today she got to fire up one of the four-wheelers. The snow had melted, and though they may get a random dusting here and there as they got deeper into spring, her instincts said the cold was behind them for the most part.

Spring and summer were her favorite seasons in Alaska. She would take a four-wheeler over a snowmobile any day! It was still chilly out, but today she was wearing short sleeves just to soak up as much of that sunshine as she could.

She made her way back to the barn and gassed up her favorite four-wheeler, let it run for a while to warm it up, and then eased it outside.

Jaydah was headed this way, so Anya waved to her.

“Going to check your trapline?” she asked.

“Yeeeees,” she drawled out.

“Ha. Liar. Going to see the human?” Jaydah guessed as she came to stand beside her.

“I’m meeting his brother and father today,” she said low.

Jaydah’s ruddy eyebrows arched up high. “It’s getting serious then.”

“Oh, I don’t know,” Anya said, dropping her gaze to the muddy ground to hide her blush.

Jaydah canted her head and asked, “It’s a love match, isn’t it?”

She shouldn’t answer. She shouldn’t say anything because it would put Owen in the line of fire.

But…

Jaydah had been supportive. So had Eryn and Kian, and most importantly, so had her king, Biergon the Dead. He didn’t seem to care at all that Owen was a human. He could’ve been a frog for all Biergon cared, so long as Owen was good to her. He said so himself.

“You know how they say it happens fast?” she asked Jaydah low.

“A love match?” Jaydah nodded. “I sure do, and I have a feeling I know what you will say next.”

“You and Biergon are clearly a love match. Anyone with eyes in their head can see he loves you, and that you love him.”

Jaydah’s smile was so mushy. “Yes. Very much.”

“You didn’t have that with him before, but when he came back different, I watched you. It was very fast, so that makes me think this isn’t perhaps so strange that I would go through something fast too. My bear wants to be with him always. I can’t stop thinking about him.
