I know that sounds silly. But the subconscious can take things very literally. Double-negative goals can cause a person to feel he or she is caught in an endless cycle of succeeding and failing, only to succeed and fail again, and again.
The same can be said for losing weight or quitting drinking. Any undesirable behavior or condition can lead a person into the mistake of setting a double-negative goal.
Single-positive goals require the person to move beyond this negative fixation. The correct question is, “If you did succeed at stopping smoking (losing weight, quitting drinking), what would be the desired result?”
