What You Need
big piece of paper (or several smaller pieces connected by gluing or taping), about 12″ × 22″ (30cm × 56cm)
china marker
variety of writing instruments such as: gel pens, fiber-tip pens, charcoal sticks, poster-paint markers, broad-tipped markers or chisel-tipped markers
eraser, either kneaded or electric
kitchen timer
spray bottle of distilled water
acrylic paint and paintbrushes
India inks in various colors
1 Spread your unfolded paper out in front of you. Set a timer for three minutes. Using a white china marker, begin writing and push your hand to make big, bold strokes. You won’t see the words as you write, but don’t let this deter you. When you get to the end of the piece of paper, flip it over and write on the other side. When you reach the end again, return to the first side and keep writing, right over your original words. Keep doing this until the timer sounds and the page is filled with huge, overlapping words that create a tangle of lines as a background.
Spray one side of the paper with water. If you are using a sturdy paper, such as Velin Arches, you can dip the paper in water and shake off most of the water. The china marker acts as a resist.
Drip 3–5 drops of ink on one short edge of the unfolded paper. Pick up the short edge, so the ink runs into the water and blends with it. Don’t try to control the flow, let it find its own way. Create a pale background by spraying with more water. Create a darker background by not spraying the paper at all until the ink begins to soak into the paper, then spray gently to allow the ink to spread.
