CHAPTER 13

Charger drove as carefully as he could, but it seemed like every pothole in the road he hit. Rage consumed him each time he heard a moan of pain from her. His hand tightened on the wheel to the point it was hampering his driving.

Every hit she took tonight he had felt as if it was his body taking the beating. It took everything he possessed not to run out there and block every kick, punch or leg sweep just so she didn’t have to absorb the pain. He hadn’t. He had remained where he was watching what was happening unfold. He was so fucking proud of her that his throat had tightened into a knot.

Stopping at a red light he glanced over at her. Her head was leaned back against the headrest, her eyes were closed. Even with the bruising and swelling she was beautiful.

“You still with me?” Charger asked making light of the situation because Raven wouldn’t want it any other way.

“For the moment, but if we’re being honest if I died right now, I wouldn’t mind it.” She said shifting her body with a grimace of pain.

The light turned and he took off careful not to jerk her. “We’re almost there.” Charger informed her, but she only mumbled a reply. “Listen, I’m proud of you. You did good. Kane had a shiner for about a half an hour. Bishop had a bloody nose. Steve had a welt on his forehead from the knee smash you did. None of them came out of their minute without some sort of injury.”

“Good.” Raven mumbled enough that he could understand her. “I know any one of them could have taken me out if they really wanted to, but I made it damn hard for them to do it. My goal was to stay upright and inflict at least one injury to each of them.”

“You succeeded.” Charger smiled like the proud trainer that he was. “I still don’t think Kent knows his own name. That was one hell of a headbutt.”

“He’s a dick.” Raven lifted her head slowly. “He didn’t have to do that to Katrina. He humiliated her on purpose.”

“It’s the name of the game, Raven.” Charger reminded her, but he did agree with her. Kent was a dick who did want to humiliate Katrina and tried to do the same thing to Raven, but failed.

“Yeah, I know.” Raven grumbled. “He’s still a dick. I’m going to train her. Katrina reminds me of me. She will be ready next time.”

Charger thought back to the speech she gave the Mates before they left. Raven had never had it easy in their world and yet, sometimes he had refused to see that. He was so used to treating her as one of the guys and yet, she wasn’t. She was a female who confused the fuck out of him.

“Can I ask you something?” He asked as he pulled up to her place and parked.

She looked over at him, one eye swollen shut, the other staring intently at him.
