LUCY KIRKWOOD. Celeste was right. The footage that survives of State of Awake is impressive. But her comments seem to take the wind from his sails. Chris Challis says one minute theyâd been entering film festivals, the next Noahâs talking about making a documentary instead. But six months go by. A year, eighteen months, nothing happens.
Noahâs still making the videos though, still gaining subscribers, heâs got nearly three hundred thousand at this point. But itâs when Celeste suddenly starts appearing in them, in January 2019, that the channel really takes off.
Sheâs a sunny but auxiliary presence at first, more Debbie McGee than Eleanor Roosevelt. But her confidence blooms quickly. The videos from this time are fast and funny, slightly chaotic but incredibly engaging, covering subjects like the new ten-year plan for the NHS, the first Extinction Rebellion protest, the birth of Archie Mountbatten-Windsor and, a fan favourite, the announcement by the bakery chain Greggs of a meat-free sausage roll.
They disagree, frequently, passionately, but their brains seem synchronised â they donât just finish each otherâs sentences, but each otherâs paragraphs. Itâs like watching two people play absolutely beautiful tennis. Itâs, well, sexy.
The videos have been almost clandestine for Noah, but Celesteâs proud: she starts posting links on her Facebook page. This causes more than one fierce public online fight with members of her extended family, who accuse Noah of being a fearmonger, a conspiracy theorist, and in one particularly lively exchange, âGreta Thunbergâs bumboyâ. Following this, Celeste deletes all of her social media.
By Christmas 2019, the couple have got one-point-two million subscribers and are putting out two videos a week, but in reality, theyâve become pretty insular. Theyâd discussed spending the holiday with Celesteâs family, but cancel at the last moment, and spend Christmas Day at home, alone.
