18. Discipline was a very real concern for the University and the king. The dangers involved in assembling large numbers of teenagers in one place were real and clearly perceived, and the Pré-aux-Clercs riot of 1557 was only one of numerous examples of the potential for violence. Ramus claimed that discipline could be maintained in the large public lectures he envisioned. Public lectures had been the rule for 750 years without major problems, and if the University returned to the path of virtue the students would too. In any case, Ramus added, if the practice of some virtue opens the way to vice, the solution is not to abandon the virtue but to correct the vice; Ramus, Advertissements, 136.
