Kevin had just walked into the bustling gallery of the event where he’d promised to meet Raina, when he spotted Sean heading across the room for him. Every nerve in his body wanted to rush to his friend and demand what had happened, because something was clearly wrong. But years of training in enemy territory to maintain an upper hand, no matter the cost, kept him calm. In control. Pulling on the bottom edge of his jacket, he eased along the crowd and met Sean halfway.

In a low, composed tone only Kevin could hear, Sean said, “Raina is safe, she’s with Kat.”

“Do we need to stay here for any amount of time?”

“Without our wives, I think it would appear odd.”

Kevin raised a curious brow. “Then why show at all?”

Sean gave a predatory smile. “Who says we did?”

“Figments of imagination, hmm?”

“Well, I can’t be two places at once, or even three, can you?”

Kevin chuckled, heading for the greenhouse, where they’d disappear into the night. Wouldn’t be the first or the last time they appeared only to vanish at an event. “Who have you enlisted to help spread the sightings?”

“Asherwick’s promised is feeling secluded. He’s taking her to several houses tonight. Mason and Cora will also, at the same time, be speaking of just having seen us as well at a previous engagement.”

“I wonder what people will think, our being so popular.”

“Probably that someone else was mistaken for us, so where were we really?” Sean asked.

“Indeed.”

“Don’t worry, whatever someone had planned tonight will appeared to have failed, because it did,” Sean said.

Kevin swept into a shadow with Sean close behind. The humid, earthen air hung heavily around them. Above, rain gently pelted the sheets of glass. Out in the night, a faint wind blew, chilling the already cold air further. His jacket soaked through quickly. They walked down the street away from the house to a hired carriage Sean had waiting.

Water puddled at their feet and on the wooden benches they sat on across from each other. Sean shut the door firmly and then rapped on the roof to let the driver know they were ready to leave. The steady clop of hooves and wooden wheels treading along over brick covered any conversation that could have escaped to the driver.

“Someone gave your wife gifts tonight,” Sean said, leaning back against the rough wood of the hired transport.

“And I’m assuming sent her to the wrong event as well.”

Sean nodded. “Correct.”

Kevin kept from slamming his fist into the thin wooden wall beside him. “Damn. I thought I handled the spy in that house.”

“Or perhaps Synintel has one in his. After all, she said the schedule had the event on it.” Then after a brief pause, Sean asked, “Does he really schedule her life?”

“Sadly yes, and none of that changed with my being home.”

Sean tapped his fingers on the seat. “You don’t check what she receives?”

“I haven’t, no. Mine usually arrives in a stack with other mail. I’ve always assumed Raina’s match. I won’t make the mistake again.
